Matt Damon used the Ice Bucket challenge as a means to draw attention to the worldwide lack of accessible clean water. The co-founder of water.org was challenged by Hollywood pals Ben Affleck and Jimmy Kimmel and felt a sense of conflict when presented with the chance to waste a bucket of clean water when 800 million people around the world do not have clean water to drink.
Damon’s twist? He used toilet water.
“For those of you like my wife who think this is really disgusting, keep in mind that the water in our toilets in the west is actually cleaner that the water that most people in the developing world have access to,” Damon said as he filled his ice bucket from his toilet water.
He then dumped the water on his head and challenged fellow actor George Clooney, musician Bono, and NFL quarterback Tom Brady.
According to their website, water.org is a non profit organization that works to provide access to safe water and sanitation in Africa, South Asia, and Central America. In their 2013 Annual Report, they claim to have provided access for one million people. Visit water.org for more information, or to donate.
